Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter awards five different scholarships to students currently in high school, undergraduate, and graduate programs here in the Houston area. Each of these scholarships are one-time awards and have different criteria and guidelines specific to each.

There is one scholarship application that can be filled out for any of these scholarships. The criteria and guidelines for each are listed below. Review the criteria and then indicate on the application which scholarship you are applying for.

The 2024 application period opens on January 13, 2024 and applications should be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on March 13, 2024.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

 

*To be eligible for these one-time awards, the recipient must:

  1. Upload current transcript showing GPA and include a copy of your most recent class schedule.
  2. Upload copy of applicable test scores (optional) -- SAT/ACT for high school students; GRE/GMAT for graduate students.
  3. Upload one color photo.
  4. Submit scholarship application electronically by 11:59 p.m. on March 13, 2024.
  5. If selected, provide proof of enrollment to the Committee (example: enrollment certificate, class or fee schedule).
  6. Be aware that all application materials will become the property of Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter and will be properly discarded after the selection process.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Metropolitan Community Scholarship

  1. Be an African American male or female graduating high school or hold a GED equivalent.
  2. Upload one letter of recommendation from a high school counselor, teacher or administrator.
  3. Upload one letter of recommendation from a minister or community leader.
  4. Upload a typed essay (300-500 words) answering this prompt:
    Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a 5-point programmatic thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement. Explain in detail which of these five are impactful to you, and elaborate on how this shapes your future. 
    Remember: Please be clear and concise in answering this prompt.

Johnson & Cheryl Austrie S.E.E.D. (Self Empowerment through Education and Development) Fund

  1. Be an African American high school senior.
  2. Seeking a career in a trade (Cosmetology/Barber, Mechanics, Welding, Electrician, HVAC, etc.).
  3. Have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Charles C. and Junell Sims Drisdale Memorial Scholarship

  1. Be a junior or senior undergraduate student attending a historically Black college or university (HBCU).
  2. Major in Education or Science.
  3. Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
The Hicks-Humphrey Memorial Scholarship
  1. Be a full-time graduate student in the first or second year of the Master of Business Administration program at the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University.
  2. Must be in good standing and enrolled in at least nine (9) credit hours.
  3. Upload copy of official TSU acceptance letter.
  4. Upload two (2) letters of recommendation:
    • Professional: expressing personal achievement, leadership qualities, and academic aptitude.
    • Community Based: expressing applicant’s involvement and impact within an organization/community.
  5. Upload a comprehensive personal statement discussing work experience, short- and long-term educational and professional goals, how you will use the funds, and why you are the best qualified candidate for the scholarship.
  6. Upload current resume.


Reisha Beaty Ferrier T.O.R.C.H. Bearer Scholarship

  1. Be an African American male or female graduate student at any accredited college or university.
  2. Be currently enrolled within the first three years of a graduate degree program.
  3. Must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program that culminates in the attainment of a master’s, professional, or doctoral degree.
  4. Upload two (2) letters of recommendation:
    • Recommendation letters should highlight the applicant's leadership skills and qualities.
    • At least one letter should be from a professional reference.
  5. Upload Personal Statement - Applicant should craft a personal statement that meets the following requirements:
    • 350-500 words
    • Provides details of the applicant’s professional and leadership experiences.
    • Provides an explanation of the applicant's professional goals.
