Chapter History

Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter (HMAC) of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated was chartered November 9, 1974 under President Lillian Pierce Benbow. Many of the women who worked to charter the chapter were part of the Houston Alumnae Chapter at that time. However, these women wanted to establish an additional chapter. They felt that Houston was becoming a large metropolitan area and that a second Alumnae Chapter would enhance their service areas. Aster Lee Mock and three other Deltas conceived the idea of establishing a second Delta chapter in the greater Houston area in 1974. It was because of their vision that Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter exists. The Regional Director, Eula Butler, encouraged the women to start the chartering process. The first official planning meeting of the proposed chapter began at 10:30 A.M. on August 31, 1974, in the home of Aster Lee Mock and on October 26, 1974, the chapter charter was signed at the Lonnie Smith Library on Scott, in the heart of historic Third Ward. Aster Lee Mock served as chairperson of the committee to establish the new chapter and after the chartering in 1974 she was elected the first president of Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter. Eula Butler played a colossal role in the establishment of Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter.
